Why School Choice?
A quality education is key to achieving the American Dream. It lays the foundation for a thriving and more prosperous America by ensuring that the next generation does better and goes further than the last. School choice expands educational opportunities to improve education by empowering families to choose the best school for their child.
Too often families have no option than to send their children to a failing or underperforming school just because of their zip code or their socio-economic status. Others simply find themselves in a school that does not meet their needs. But all children should have access to a high-quality education, regardless of their circumstances. A quality education is too important to entrust to whichever school happens to be assigned by local administrators.
Increasing access to high performing charter, public, or private schools provides a way for all students, but particularly low-income or disadvantaged students, to thrive academically. Expanding educational options encourage greater performance among all schools. Because freedom unleashes innovation, when families have the freedom to choose the right school for their child it encourages all schools to improve in order to meet the needs of their students. Access to a quality education suited to meet the particular needs of each student is what all our children deserve.
Hispanic Students in Nevada
The future of Nevada lies in its youth and 41% of K-12 students in Nevada are Hispanic. Unfortunately, Hispanic students are still lagging behind their peers. When it comes to high school graduation only 69% of Hispanic students are graduating from high school, 10 percentage points lower than White students. Increased educational opportunities can make the difference for many Latino students striving for academic success that will prepare them for a successful future.
